Skiing in Bend… or not

In addition to running the cycling team, I also work for MBSEF teaching cycling and nordic skiing to juniors. I’m also the Chief of Course for all of our local nordic races up at Mt. Bachelor. We were supposed to have a race today but they closed the highway to the mountain at 6am just as I was heading up to meet the groomer. Apparently, there were 40 mph winds blowing 12-30 inches of snow all over the place. The road finally opened at 9:45.

With all the best skiers in Michigan skiing on 200 truckloads of crappy, rocky transplanted snow, the six feet of snow we’ve gotten on the nordic trails this week surely cannot be seen as an inconvenience, even if we did have to cancel the race…

This is a photo from the race just before Christmas where I was standing in the storm, dumping 2″/hour for the seven hours I was out on the trails. If you stopped moving you were buried.
