Karey, Lisa, Jackie
Our newly formed Women’s Team had an excellent start to the 2009 season by finishing 1, 2, 4 overall at the Cherry Pie road race on Feb. 15.
Despite the small field, it’s still pretty cool to sweep the podium:
Women 1/2
- Lisa Turnbull (TAI)
- Jackie Cohen (TAI)
- Pam Archer (TAI)
Karey Miles was 3rd for women cat3 with Jessi Brunson right behind in 4th.
Lisa Turnbull’s race report:
It was quite a fun team event on the women’s side. We were mostly trying to show the TAI women were a force to be reckoned with this season, while trying to get Karey Miles, a Cat 3, upgrade points. Unfortunately, there weren’t any other 1-2s in the field [beside TAI]. Jackie Cohen and I ramped up the pace over the climb at the end of lap 1 and ended up with one strong Cat 3 barely hanging on (we were trying to make a selection, but not that much of a selection!). We sat up until Karey and one other joined us, and then we decided to make it stick. We had Pam and Jessi behind, helping us to stay away. Jackie and I tried a variety of tactics to loose the other Cat 3s, but we weren’t able to get Karey isolated from the other two. Since they were not going to work, Jackie and I eventually ended up trading pulls at sub-tempo pace, which eventually resulting in our gap actually opening to 6 minutes. In the end, things worked out with Karey finishing 3rd in the 3s. Jessi Brunson (testing out the TAI team and helping us out) was 4th. I can’t resist kicking it on a nice 1k climb, and enjoyed listening to others whine about starting the sprint 50 seconds from the finish. It was a good team effort and it was fun to already hear people speculate that the TAI women will be very strong this season.
For the men, Adam Blanchard was 5th in the 1/2 race, showing that his school work isn’t interferring too much with his riding!
There were some interesting moments in the cat3 race, with Spencer Newell reporting, “The lasting image I have from yesterday is some guy flying 30 feet, literally, into a field around one of the 90 degree corners on the back side of the course. I hope he’s okay!”
Stay tuned as we ramp up for 2009!
